Early Years
No summer afternoon is complete without a bowl of juicy red
strawberries and
fresh cream. And for more than 160 years this area has been
supplying fresh
strawberries to the nation.
In years gone by, during the picking season, the stations of Bursledon
and Swanwick were
thronged with growers loading their fruit onto special trains
which then took the produce all over the country.
The combination of a mild, frost-free, climate and suitable soils meant
that Titchfield strawberries were not only considered to be the best
but were also the first to market.

Steve
Harris
The founder of Steve Harris Farms Ltd was born on the 19th of December
1910 in Stubbington. Steve was the sixth of ten children. At the age of
just 15 he bought his first lorry, for £45 - £1 down and a £1 a week
until it was paid for.
The young Steve soon found a living delivering local produce - potatoes
to Portsmouth and fruit to Covent Garden.
In 1934 he had enough money to buy land at Meon where his brother Jim
already had 13 acres.
In 1939 Les Downes started work on the farm and today still works at
Meon Bye Farm alongside his son, Eric, who is farm manager.

Today the farm grows strawberries,
